End of life care at Ancare VetPet Euthanasia: Knowing When It’s Time

One of the most difficult decisions a pet owner may face is determining when it is time to say goodbye. Our pets are family, and wanting to hold on to them for as long as possible is a natural and loving response.

While every pet and situation is unique, there are some common signs that may indicate your pet’s quality of life is declining. These can include ongoing pain that cannot be well managed, difficulty breathing, loss of appetite, inability to stand or walk comfortably, frequent accidents, or a loss of interest in things they once enjoyed. When bad days begin to outweigh the good, it may be time to consider what is most compassionate for your pet.

Euthanasia is a gentle, peaceful process designed to prevent unnecessary suffering. Our goal is to provide comfort, not only for your pet, but for you as well. The procedure is performed in our grieving room with care and dignity, typically beginning with sedation to ensure your pet is relaxed and free from anxiety. When you are ready, the final medication is administered, allowing your pet to pass calmly and painlessly.

You do not have to make this decision alone. Our veterinary team is here to help guide you through assessing your pet’s quality of life and to answer any questions you may have. We can talk through your concerns, discuss your pet’s condition, and support you in making the decision that feels right for your family.

Above all, choosing euthanasia is an act of love. It is a way to give your pet a peaceful passing and to spare them from unnecessary pain or distress.

We are here for you before, during, and after—offering compassion, understanding, and support every step of the way.

Cremation Services:

At Ancare Veterinary Hospital, we understand that saying goodbye to a beloved pet is one of the most difficult moments a family can face. Our team is here to support you.

Because we provide on-site cremation services, your pet will remain in our trusted care from the moment of passing until their ashes are returned to you. This allows our doctors and staff to personally and respectfully handle your pet’s remains, ensuring the highest level of care and attention.

We offer a variety of aftercare options to meet your wishes, including private cremation, which allows you to have your pet’s ashes returned to you.

All private cremations include a standard black urn. We also offer a premium urn for those who wish to create a more personalized tribute. The premium urn is personalized with your pet's name, paw, and a special engraved message. Our team is happy to provide guidance, or you may choose words that are most meaningful to you.

This room features a separate entrance and exit to allow for as much privacy as possible, giving you the time and space you need without interruption. Within the room, you’ll also find a large chalk wall where families are invited to write a message, memory, or tribute in honor of their beloved pet. There is also a jar of chocolate kisses because  "no dog should go to Heaven without tasting chocolate".

Assessing Your Pet’s Quality of Life

This is one of the questions we’re asked most often, and it’s also one of the hardest to answer. Deciding when it’s time is deeply personal and different for every pet and family.

If you’re unsure, we encourage you to schedule a consultation with our veterinary team. We’re here to listen, talk through your concerns, and help you assess your pet’s quality of life with honesty and compassion. Some families also find it helpful to use a quality-of-life scale, like the one provided by Lap of Love, as a guide during this emotional time.

We know that pet euthanasia is never an easy decision, and we’re here to help you and your family in any way we can. Please don’t hesitate to contact us at (815) 223-1000 if you have any questions.
